...saw "No Country For Old Men" the other night. As far as a killing spree movie goes, this one qualifies as a "film." Very understated in the violence and gore, making the whole story very plausible. Great cast, not much dialogue, steady and methodical pace. SPOILER ALERT! I have to say though, that I didn't like the way Josh Brolin's character met his demise. He was a main character, and his killing sort of had the feel of an afterthought, very anticlimatic. Just spitballing...

I took my daughter to see "Cars 2" the other night. She was less than impressed. She didn't like that the story was a spy story. Kids...what do they know. In fairness, she is not a big fan of "Cars," so why did I bring her? She asked me to. The graphics were amazing. On the big screen, certainly that enhanced the image. Overall, I thought the movie was OK. The villians were Gremlins and Pacers. That's funny right there I don't care who you are. It did get a bit long and preachy. What with the underlying theme of alternative fuels. The "Toy Story" short at the beginning was very amusing, especially if you like Ken and Barbie...what? I think the caricature of those iconic dolls is both funny and poignant. Anyway, waiting for Netflix would have been ideal for this one.

It was Jeff Bridges week for Netflix. I watched both "Crazy Heart" and "True Grit." He played the same type of character in both films; a washed-up drunkerd, with a cowboy accent. Ol' Jeff was very believable in both roles. Even the pace of the plot was similar in both films; methodical. Both were easy stories to follow, without much thought required by the viewer. The soundtrack for "Crazy Heart" was disappointing for me. Bridges character, Bad Blake, was in his prime during the late 70"s and early 80"s. The music had a Merle Haggard or Waylon Jennings flavor to it. I like country music, but that era doesn't speak to me. The young actress that co-starred in "True Grit" was very entertaining, as was Matt Damon. The banter between Texas Ranger Damon and U.S. Marshal Bridges was amusing. All in all, I enjoyed both films.

My wife and I went to see "Larry Crown" last night. Yup, paid full price. It was date night, she's worth it. Hey-o! When we saw "Cars 2" with our daughter, there was a trailor for this. The on-screen chemistry between Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts looked fun, so it was an easy choice. Hanks wrote, directed and starred in this movie. Wow, busy guy. His wife has a cameo appearance. It was very entertaining. It's not a "chick flick" in the usual sense. The story isn't about the guy's relationship with the gal. It's not about the belief that it's never too late for a second chance at relationships or life in general. It's more about being able to find opportunities for something better, or even something just as good as what was lost, when life throws you a curve ball. It's definately an optimist's movie. Oh, and I found it hilarious that a bunch of the characters were in a "scooter gang!" Go Ethier!

The Dumbing Down of America continues! A fine example is movie trailers. Yes, Patience, you are correct. Trailers give waaay toooo much! But people need to be sure that they want to see this movie, so lay it all out there. Sad. Not much is left to the imagination anymore. Nathan, you're onto something. Just tell me who is in it, who directed it, and a very very short clip of the plot, and that's it, thank you Studio, I'll take it from here.

Speaking of which, the trailer for "Captain America" is a good example of this. After watching that, people only need to see the movie just for the particulars of the action sequences. I've already seen the rest! And btw, I'll pass. It's too bad, because I love WWII movies, but the fact that this one is another friggin comic book movie...I make no apologies for my distain Jon, it's just not my thing, man. I'm just spitballing here but, upon reflection, perhaps my avoidance of the "comic book movie" is more about my frustration at the lack of originality from Hollywood these days and not so much my lack of respect for the comic book medium...hmm. I wonder if authors would be willing to collaborate with illustrators and create novels with graphic pictures to coincide with certain scenes from stories to aid/enhance the reading experience...just spitballing here, but, I'm sure y'all have seen illustrated versions of classics like "Moby Dick" etc, so you get what I'm saying right? Sometimes if a reader has little imagination or little experience with the topic of a book, it might be better to see an illustration of what the author is trying to create an image about. Jon brings up a valid point in that not only is society visual-based these days, but actual images are more profound than written variations. The written word is certainly more powerfull for conveying an idea or an emotion, from an articulating standpoint though, so let's not forego actually writing things down anymore, ok?
